indirectness is costly and risky

Dascal (1993) said that the indirectness is costly and risky. Costly here means that the indirectness needs more time to be said and to be decoded. The speaker will take time to say the “indirect” meaning, and the listener will take time to understand what the speaker’s real meaning. The term “risky” deals with the risk of misunderstanding between the speaker and the listener.
